Dick DeVos is an entrepreneur from Michigan. DeVos served as the Chief Executive Office for Amway, a consumer goods distribution company for over a decade. Dick DeVos is also a philanthropist, and philanthropy is something that the DeVos family has become well known for.
A large majority of the DeVos family wealth comes from direct marketing. Dick DeVos Sr. founded Amway. While there were negative rumors of ponzi scheme, Dick DeVos inherited Amway from his father to help become one of the wealthiest people in the World. DeVos and his wife run the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, which is also based out of Michigan. However, the DeVos family may be more widely known for their efforts to reform education.
Recent years have seen an increase in alternatives to public education, such as homeschooling and the rise of charter schools. There is perhaps a direct correlation to the rise in alternatives to public education and the DeVos family backing these causes and donating funds in that direction. The DeVos family also contributes to Christian schools and youth groups, including Focus on the Family.
DeVos has also put some of his income into conservative political campaigns based out of the Republican Party. However, DeVos has also put some of his finances into bi-partisan causes such as his contribution to a new children’s hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The DeVos family company Amway has also sponsored the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association, as well as the Grand Rapids Griffiths of the American Hockey League.
The DeVos family base most of their philanthropy on helping out religious schools and social conservative policies, such as supporting efforts to turn Michigan into a right to work state.
