Citizens United is wreaking all sorts of havoc on our political system. It has stacked the deck against honest politicians who do not want to take any corporate money. This allows less than honest politicians to take unlimited amounts of money in order to achieve victory. So, how do you defeat a candidate with unlimited cash?
The answer to that question seems to be playing out in Texas. A relatively unknown politician by the name of Beto O’Rourke has risen to fame quickly. News about the congressman from El Paso, Texas, has spread at the speed of the Internet. Viral videos of his many town halls across Texas are helping to promote his image. Check out End Citizens United on Youtube.
The latest poll has the upstart just one point behind the incumbent. And nobody thought Ted Cruz could lose his seat in Texas, but Beto O’Rourke is right on his tail. And O’Rourke has done all of this without taking a dime from corporations.
O’Rourke is not alone in his fight. He is being endorsed by End Citizens United. The political action committee formed as a response to the disastrous Supreme Court decision that allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on our election cycles. End Citizens United is a grassroots machine that is capable of raising funds fast using only individual donations.
Ted Cruz will likely benefit from donations made by giant corporations all over the country. After all, Ted Cruz is one of the most pro-big business politicians out there. Losing Ted Cruz could see some corporations pay their fair share in taxes.
End Citizens United is carefully picking candidates like Beto O’Rourke in their fight against the decision. They are helping sympathetic candidates win to eventually disable the decision with a law or constitutional amendment.
The political action committee has also sent lawyers on the road to Florida in order to keep an eye on Rick Scott’s shady campaign-finance dealings. The group also works on the local level to change campaign finance laws with a longterm goal in mind. Eventually and with the right strategy End Citizens United will end Citizens United.
