In 2007 on October 18, Joe Arpaio arranged the arrest of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin for the articles published by one of the Village Voice Media papers. These articles criticized Joe Arpaio for his actions as Sherriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. It was reported by the Phoenix New Times that he was abusing his position as Sherriff. Inmates in the jails controlled by Arpaio had been widely mistreated and in some cases died under questionable circumstances.
In addition, the publication belonging to Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin reported on the rampant racism towards immigrants that was being shown in the area. The reason for the arrests was due to the fact that Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey were giving details about an ongoing investigation, one that was about themselves. Throughout Joe Arpaio’s career, many of his actions have been considered questionable at best. Many of his actions were outright illegal, as Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin reported. He continued his abuses throughout his entire career.
After the work released by Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey began to receive national recognition, Joe Arpaio began to get frustrated about not being able to keep his actions under wraps. His actions were being brought to the spotlight and people were demanding action. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin won a suit against the Sherriff that was settled for $3.7 million.
After the lawsuit, Joe Arpaio was not reelected and was found in contempt in the summer of 2017. While many saw this as justice finally being served, it was not something that would last.
