Alex Pall was a DJ growing up and had such a passion for music that it’s only natural the Chainsmokers have become a worldwide success. At first, Alex Pall was working in an art gallery while working a side job as a DJ and Andrew Taggart was working on producing music in college. When the two met after Alex Pall’s former member of the Chainsmokers left, they knew they would make a great team.
The two of them knew it would work due to their matched level of passion for their DJ work. Both Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart wanted the Chainsmokers to succeed, and both of them were aware of the current trends within electronic music. Combining their drive and ambition with their creativity and passion, Pall and Taggart got to work on creating a unique identity for the Chainsmokers that would help them stand out musically.
The Chainsmokers truly are an anomaly in the music industry. According to Alex, it’s really hard to combine the quality production of a DJ with the feelings, emotions, and identities that musicians in other genres have today. However, the Chainsmokers succeeded perfectly at this, taking the anonymity out of their work and crafting songs about events that actually happened in their lives. Their song “Closer” exemplifies this perfectly as a song about Andrew Taggart’s complicated feelings towards his ex-girlfriend. By combining pop music and dance music with hip hop, the Chainsmokers have become a worldwide success within the music industry.
While the Chainsmokers’ primary audience is ages 16-25, they are expanding their music to impact people of all ages internationally through hits like “Closer”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, “Waterbed”, and “Roses”. They connect with all of their fans through Instagram and through their music. To the Chainsmokers, it isn’t just about a certain demographic. It’s about reaching people through their music and making them feel a certain way. Above all, the Chainsmokers continue to create a unique sound and show to stay on top of the music industry as it keeps changing.
